Christmas Shipping Deadlines 2026: Last Days to Ship With USPS, FedEx and UPS
Christmas 2026 shipping deadlines: USPS Ground Advantage Dec 17, Priority Mail Dec 18, FedEx and UPS overnight Dec 23, plus store order cutoffs and last-minute options.
Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, and the carriers have already published their last recommended ship dates. If you are mailing gifts with USPS Ground Advantage, the date to remember is Thursday, December 17. If you are ordering online, many big stores stopped guaranteeing standard delivery between December 16 and 18 last year, with a few holding on until December 21 to 23. This guide puts every carrier's deadline in one place, shows when last year's retailer cutoffs fell, and lists the last-minute options for when you have missed them. The Short Answer: Ship by These Dates
- Mailing a gift the cheapest way: USPS Ground Advantage or First-Class Mail by Thursday, December 17 (Ground Advantage by December 16 for Alaska and Hawaii).
- Mailing a gift with a little more time: USPS Priority Mail by Friday, December 18.
- Last chance with an overnight service: FedEx overnight by Wednesday, December 23, and UPS Next Day Air by about the same date.
- Ordering online at standard shipping: aim to order by Wednesday, December 16, then check the delivery date at checkout.

UPS: What We Know So Far
UPS does not publish one list of Christmas ship-by dates. It says the right date depends on the service, where you ship from and where the package is going, and it asks shippers to use its time and cost calculator. What UPS has confirmed for 2026:
- UPS delivers for all services on Thursday, December 24, but only Air and international Air packages are picked up that day, and only if the pickup was arranged by December 18. There is no UPS Ground pickup on Christmas Eve.
- UPS is closed for pickup and delivery on Friday, December 25.
- UPS 2nd Day Air packages sent on December 14, 15, 16 or 21, and 3 Day Select packages sent on December 14 or 15, may need an extra day in transit.
Shipping software provider ShipStation estimates these UPS cutoffs for the contiguous US: UPS 3 Day Select by December 21, 2nd Day Air by December 22 and Next Day Air by December 23. If you want extra margin because of the transit warnings above, send 2nd Day Air by Friday, December 18.
When Do Online Stores Stop Guaranteeing Christmas Delivery?
Most retailers announce their 2026 cutoffs in early December. Until they do, last year's dates are the best guide. These were the 2025 order deadlines for delivery by Christmas Eve:
| Store | Standard shipping (2025) | Faster options (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | About December 16 (non-Prime) | December 22 for Prime, same-day delivery in many cities through Christmas Eve |
| Walmart | December 23 by 12:30 p.m. local time | Express delivery until 5 p.m. on December 24, store pickup on in-stock items |
| Target | December 18 | December 22 in many ZIP codes, same-day delivery through December 23 |
| Best Buy | December 17 | December 21 |
| Macy's | December 21 | December 22, same-day until 10 a.m. on December 24 |
| Kohl's | December 17 | December 19 for 2-day, December 20 for 1-day |
| The Home Depot | December 17 for most shipped gifts | Smaller items up to December 21 |
| Apple | December 22 for in-stock products | Store pickup where available |
One warning: items sold by third-party sellers on Amazon and Walmart do not always follow the store's own holiday cutoff. Check the delivery date shown for that exact item before you order.
Missed the Deadline? Last-Minute Options
- Buy online, pick up in store. Walmart, Target, Best Buy and The Home Depot let you pick up in-stock items the same day, often until Christmas Eve.
- Same-day delivery. Amazon, Walmart and Target offer same-day delivery in many areas, usually with a small fee or membership.
- Digital gifts. E-gift cards, subscriptions and online classes arrive instantly by email, which makes them the safest choice after about December 22.
- Ship directly to the recipient. Sending a gift straight from the store to the person you are giving it to saves a second round of mailing.
How Holiday Returns Work if the Gift Is Wrong
Most big retailers extend their return windows for holiday purchases, so a gift bought in November or December can usually be returned well into January. Best Buy has already confirmed that most purchases made from October 30 to December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 15, 2027. Amazon, Walmart and Macy's allowed returns until January 31 last season. Our Black Friday deals guide lists the holiday return rules store by store.
How We Checked
The USPS dates come from the Postal Service's 2026 holiday shipping announcement of September 22, 2026, the FedEx dates from FedEx's 2026 Peak Last Day to Ship schedule, and the UPS details from UPS's 2026 holiday schedule, with estimated UPS cutoffs from ShipStation's 2026 deadline guide. Retailer cutoffs are the 2025 dates reported by ConsumerAffairs in December 2025, because most stores have not yet published their 2026 dates. We check these sources again whenever we update this guide and will add each store's 2026 cutoff as it is announced. Always confirm the delivery date at checkout before you buy.
